About GameChest

GameChest is a board game shelf on your phone, with your friends' shelves next to it. It's made by Nuno, in Edinburgh, with a few friends who use it and say what's wrong with it.

Updated

Why it exists

It started with Nuno's collection and a spreadsheet that half-described it. The spreadsheet wasn't on a phone in any useful form, had no covers, and keeping it up to date was a chore that didn't get done. Meanwhile the questions kept coming: what to sell, and, standing in a shop, whether a game was already on the shelf.

So the first job was small: know what's on the shelf, on a phone, accurately, and make it easy to move games on and off it. That is still the foundation. The rest grew from it: game nights, friends' shelves, selling and buying, and help deciding what to keep and how to arrange the shelf. Everything it does, feature by feature.

Why it's free

There's nothing to pay and no ads: GameChest is non-commercial. The answer to Is it free? has the details, and where BoardGameGeek comes into it.

What it's made with

GameChest is developed with the help of Claude, Anthropic's AI, and every AI feature in it runs on Claude: the curator's brief, Ask the shelf, the listing draft, Snap the shelf, reading a box back and reading your copy's photos on Sell it. Most run only when someone asks, and that someone can be a friend: their brief or question can include what they see of your shelf. On Sell it, the photos are read and the listing written on their own, and what comes back is yours to confirm. The questions and answers say more.

It runs on Vercel, Cloudflare and Supabase, and sends email through Resend. Game facts, covers and GeekMarket prices come from BoardGameGeek; the other asking prices, and the listings checked for games you want, come from eBay UK.

Who sees what

Friends see part of your shelf, never what you paid, your notes or the details of your plays. Someone you share a shelf with sees and changes everything on it. Nuno, who runs GameChest, can see account details such as your email address, to run and support it. Privacy says more, and so do the questions and answers on what friends see.
